Types of meat to look for
- Wagyu beef (和牛): the headline act. Comes as sliced (薄切り for shabu-shabu or sukiyaki), steaks (ステーキ), yakiniku cuts (焼肉用), and ground beef (ひき肉/切り落とし). Grades run up to A5, the highest marbling tier.
- Pork — 黒豚 (kurobuta / Berkshire): Kagoshima's famous black pork is tender and flavorful, and bulk pork sets are outstanding value.
- Chicken — 地鶏 (jidori, premium free-range): regional branded chickens with firm texture and rich flavor, often offered in large, freezer-friendly quantities.
Note on amounts: the weights and donation figures below are typical ranges, not specific listings. Exact cuts, grades, and quantities vary by municipality and change through the year — always check the current product page before donating.
Donation tiers: what to expect
- ~¥10,000: roughly 500g–1kg of beef (often sliced/切り落とし), or 2–4kg of pork or chicken. The best value-for-volume tier, especially for pork and chicken.
- ~¥20,000: around 800g–1.5kg of premium beef, including nicer cuts and higher grades.
- ~¥30,000 and up: proper A5 wagyu steaks and gift-quality sets — the splurge tier for a special occasion.
Regions worth knowing
- 宮崎 (Miyazaki): award-winning Miyazaki beef, a perennial top pick for wagyu.
- 鹿児島 (Kagoshima): renowned for both wagyu and 黒豚 (Berkshire black pork).
- 佐賀牛 (Saga beef): highly marbled, premium brand beef from Saga.
- 米沢牛 (Yonezawa beef) — Yamagata (山形): one of Japan's classic "three great wagyu" brands, prized for tenderness.
Storage: clear freezer space first
Meat gifts ship frozen, sometimes in sizeable quantities. Before ordering a 2–4kg pork set or several wagyu portions, make sure you actually have freezer room. Re-portion large packs into meal-sized amounts before freezing so you can thaw only what you need. Plan delivery timing too — you'll want to be home to receive a frozen package.
The ¥10,000 wagyu "gotcha": at the entry ¥10,000 tier, wagyu beef usually means 切り落とし (kiriotoshi) — thin offcut slices — not thick steaks. That's still delicious for hot pot, yakiniku, and stir-fries, but if you specifically want steaks, you'll generally need to donate ¥30,000 or more. Read the cut description carefully so you're not surprised.
